I’m sitting holding a piece of wood, turning it this way ant that, gradually working it into a spoon in pure organic forms carving wooden spoons is a delightful occupation. My skills are put to the test in quite another way when as a cabinetmaker. I move away from straight lines and right angles and into a universe of curves. Two intrinsically different principles of form must be made to meet: outwardly the expressive the soft, the round and the organic and inwardly the constructive flat surfaces, edges, angles and joints. The piece must be coherent, and it must fulfil its purpose. And how wonderful it is this is cabinet making for the heart, mind and body...
